Style consultations are still a new area, not everyone is ready to turn to a specialist, and those who order a consultation often do not fully understand how to get the desired result and what should generally be the result of such work. Stylist Jan Sinkevich told Life around what to expect from a personal consultant, how much to pay for the work of a stylist and what to buy in Irkutsk stores in the spring.
Stylist, image expert
It is worth starting with expectations. A miracle is often expected from a style specialist, this incredible “before” and “after”. Transformations not only external, but also internal. Certain emotional support and help. Often - beliefs that the plump figure is still in order, and clothing for young people is quite suitable for an adult. Let's be realistic. A stylist is neither a mom nor a wizard. This is a specialist who is engaged in certain activities. His main task is to work with the client’s personality style, with his wishes and needs, without trying to remake him. And yet - to convey to the client his strengths and features with which you can work. For example, age can be on hand, allowing you to create images for a woman that are not available for a twenty-year-old girl, she will look ridiculous in them, and an adult woman will be luxurious and dignified.
The problem of "nothing to wear" is connected not with the fact that the dressing room is empty, but with the fact that we do not understand what image we want to create, what social mask we need
Many expect that working with a stylist will be some kind of magic, an easy and enjoyable adventure. No, this is work, moreover, joint. We make out the wardrobe, often this is a routine. We select the sets, first very accurately figuring out what we need to get in the end. The magic begins when you put it on, go, and feel different. The way you want to be.
They say that not everyone can be artists, but everyone can become a work of art. Typically, a stylist is expected to make an image based entirely on his taste and experience. And it is possible. But my task is rather to show the possibilities, expand the range of perception, offer something that was not in the wardrobe before, give new experience and teach the client to do the same. Become a stylist for yourself. Most have a certain degree of blindness regarding their style: simply because we are used to ourselves. We see ourselves every day many times in the mirror and, it seems, we know everything about ourselves. But the constantly arising “nothing to wear” problem is not connected at all with the fact that the dressing room is empty, but with the fact that we don’t understand what image we want to create, what we want to broadcast, what social mask we need at any given moment. This understanding is very vague, usually expressed on the periphery of consciousness by the desire for "something new," "special." And we are not in a hurry to concentrate on this, we are not thinking in this direction, because we simply do not know that it is here that we need to look for an answer.
The same thing happens in the store: how can I choose clothes if I do not understand what I want to convey through the appearance? Of course, in this case it is not clear how this image should look. If you give the child paint, he will not ask how to draw a line. He wants to portray a tank - and draws a tank. Therefore, at first it would be good to determine what we want to "depict," the image for which social role we are looking for. And then everything becomes very simple. This is not the most familiar approach, and in addition, most people rarely add new colors to their perception palette - images, variations, from which you can assemble something of your own. To do this, at the first stage, you need a stylist who will show what else you can do besides the usual sets. Show the taste of shopping, which will not be hard work, but a source of discoveries and emotions. For this, by the way, we need trends: to stir us up a bit. This is such a permitted way to go beyond oneself, one's stylistic habits.
In general, this regularly occurring “I have nothing to wear” condition is a reason to seek advice. This means that for some reason you can’t cope with your wardrobe, although there may be everything to look great.
Typically, an appeal to a stylist is postponed for two reasons: the client may consider that the stylist's services are expensive, or he is just so busy that there is no time to work with a specialist. It’s probably hard to do something with the second. If shopping can be very fast - in my experience, collecting two or three looks by picking up clothes with a client in the store can be done in just half an hour, including fitting time, then sorting out the wardrobe is a really long process. The accumulated wealth can be disassembled for three hours and six. But the cost is a moot point. It’s not even that mistakes when buying the wrong things are more expensive. This is also a question of the policy of the stylists themselves. I believe that this service should be affordable. A consultation with a personal stylist should not cost as much as an entire seasonal wardrobe. Payment of shopping depending on time is also not the best option. The client should pay for the result, not for a pleasant company. And you definitely need to use the possibilities of remote support: send a photo from a fitting room to a specialist, ask him to choose an image for an event or task - all this does not require personal consultation and you can simply include a certain number of such calls in the subscription. Experience shows that customers are happy, such support is very helpful. Finally, I consider the workshops to be very effective, including with invited specialists who can talk about makeup, underwear, fabrics and individual tailoring, accessories. And it certainly should be very affordable classes, literally up to 1000 rubles for two to three hours of work with a specialist.
Another very important point is the statement of the problem to the stylist. Usually, the client answers all questions about the desired result: "Well, I don’t know, you better know what suits me." Yes, I know what suits you. But what do you want right now? If you just wait for what the stylist will put on you, you can get a result that will delight you, and vice versa - it will disappoint. And the second is more likely. Because your image is not about the stylist’s fantasies, it’s about you.
There are people who turn to the stylist constantly - it’s easier for them. There are those who are excellent at managing their wardrobe; this may be a natural talent or an acquired skill. And the stylist is also needed for the second category of clients, either for a specific task, or from time to time, when you want something completely new. Most fashion house designers have personal stylists, and that's normal. I myself am “dressed” and consulted by two tailors with whom we, often in disputes, create my style. By the way, most of my wardrobe are custom-made things. I advise all my clients to try individual tailoring at least once. This is a very special feeling - to get clothes that are made just for you, everything is perfect in it, everything is as you want. Yes, it is important to coincide with the tailor. But the result is worth it.
I do not support the opinion that in Irkutsk stores it is difficult to choose clothes due to the scarcity of the range and overpriced. This is not true. We have something to buy and from which to collect interesting images. A couple of tips for those who are going to shop to update the spring wardrobe. In stores, first go to the racks with seasonal discounts. These are the things that the whole city now walks in - draw conclusions. The next item is the sale of the collections of last year - see if there are things that will fit into your wardrobe now and will not be on every second. For example, in the autumn collection of last year, you can quite find clothes that are perfect for spring and even summer. These are things that are still in fashion. But the people who bought them at full cost last fall have already put these clothes on the far shelf along with an autumn-winter wardrobe. Therefore, you are unlikely to meet someone dressed in the same way.
