June 28 at the Unknown Film Festival presented a film about the Ural artist Roma Bantika. The ten-minute picture of Lev Mavrin was shown on the big screen several times and on July 12 the author posted it on the web.
Life around asked the director and protagonist to talk about how the process of creating the film went.
When I finished the big project "Technical Aesthetics. Leningrad" that we did for a year, all kinds of commercial stories began, but I didn’t want to sit still. So I went to Romario Hose and offered to try first just to talk, discuss something, and then it started to spin.
The whole process took about 6 months: they did it high, slowly, as there was free time and money. Roma shoots a lot on a film camera, he has a lot of material from previous years, even his parents shot him on vhs when he was little. This material is integrated into the film quite funny, as it seems to me.
I decided to move away from the typical interview approach, because, knowing Roma, communicating strictly on a list of questions would be boring. Before recording, I threw some interesting topics, not necessarily related to creativity, and we discussed them while sitting in the kitchen. It was a reflection and crystallization of thoughts. The conversation turned out to be very chaotic, eight hours of material - several times more than if we were going along the list of questions, but more lively and interesting.
The purpose of the film is to take a fleeting snapshot of an era, a person and culture, immerse yourself in creativity, take a fresh look at something ordinary.
The response to the first shows was excellent, beyond all expectations. I think the secret is that we did it sincerely. I would like to fix something, but we decided to leave everything as it was at first. The work to the ideal can be brought on endlessly, you just need to say “stop” to yourself in time, otherwise you risk not releasing anything. Better imperfect finished film than perfect unfinished.
Artist, film hero
This film is from Yaome Bantike from the end of 2018 to the beginning of 2019. It conveys its feelings, thoughts and vision through calligraphy, typography and letters. These are just his tools. Here is a movie that tells about a young creator entering the game. I think the rules are a description, pleasant viewing.
